Jesus, In Gethsemane..

"Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation.
The spirit is willing but the body is
weak"
(Matthew 26:41)

Jesus, after having the last supper with his disciples, went to a place called Gethsemane, to pray. He knew, that the hour was near for him to be crucified and the Son of Man is betrayed in to the hands of sinners. He was deeply distressed and troubled, and he began to be sorrowful. He said to his disciples; "my soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with me"(Mthw 26:38). Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, "my Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet, not as I will, but as you will"(Mthw 26:39).

Jesus, throughout the days of his ministry in this world, was tempted, tested and overcame all of them. But, now the time has come, for him to take up the will of God, his Father, and to do for what he was sent for and make the scriptures come true; to be crucified on the cross as a sacrifice for all the sins of the world. As a man in flesh, getting prepared and facing such a moment is sorrowful. Jesus was overwhelmed with sorrow, distressed and troubled. He wanted to spend sometime alone in with Father and he wanted his disciples to keep watch with him and pray.

While Jesus fell with his face to the ground and prayed, he asked God to take away this cup from him - "cup" is the symbol of deep sorrow and suffering. Jesus felt, that his spirit is willing to do the will of God, but the body is weak. It was history what Jesus did after he overcame his last temptation; he didn't allow his body to become weak and withdraw. He accepted God's will , for his spirit was willing, and sacrificed himself taking up the courage to withstand all pains and sufferings.

That day, in Gethsemane, when Jesus finished praying and rose up and saw that his disciples, whom he asked to keep watch with him were sleeping, he remembered the same thing what he felt few moments ago. He said, "could you not keep watch with me for an hour?". He said to them "Watch and pray so that you may not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak". Many a times, we make decisions and try hard to live according to it. We try our best not to fall into temptations and to live a life of purity. Sometimes we fail. We struggle, try and try, and at last give up in our life of holiness. This is what Jesus tells, in his last troubled moments of sorrow and distress which was followed by the victory on the cross; "watch and pray so that you may not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak".

Let us watch and pray..

May God bless you..
