When The Lord Calls You By Your Name
Today's Bible Verse
The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!”
Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening.”
(1 Samuel 3: 10)
The lines that brought a tremendous change in my life and my commitment to the Lord are from one of the most influential servants of God in the past century, Evangelist Reinhard Bonnke. He said, "When God calls you, it's not much about your ability, it's more about your availability to His voice. Simply say 'Yes', and step by step, day by day, do your best to obediently follow His lead." And this is exactly the calling for all of us who are reading this incident that had taken place in the life of Prophet Samuel.
There will be many of you saying today that God has not called you to serve Him. You must be thinking in your mind, "I am just going to believe in His grace, His salvation and His gift of eternal life. I have not much to do." Sadly, it's going to be a huge 'No' to your thought. And the good news for you is, every believer of Christ Jesus, every person who claims herself/himself to be a Christian, and every one of us who lives a Christ-centred life is called to serve. Each of us has a ministry to do. Every one of us has been set with a mission to accomplish in our life. And God calls each of us for that.
1 Samuel 03 describes in detail the three times the little boy Samuel ran to Eli at night saying "Here I am, you called me." The scripture says, "Eli realized that the Lord was calling the boy. So Eli told Samuel, “Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, ‘Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in his place. The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times, “Samuel! Samuel!” Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Samuel 3: 8 -10).
When the Lord calls you by your name, this is what you may have to be prepared for - to listen to Him! It is important that you have yourself available to His voice. The first thing is to surrender yourself and ask the Lord to speak to you. Express your willingness to listen to His voice and learn to wait on the Lord. It may take days, weeks, months or even years for the Lord to speak to you. But surely the Lord will speak to you because He has called you. Once begun, the conversation goes on for eternity.
How available and prepared are you today to listen to the Lord. How prepared are you to have your ears ready to listen to His call and to try and understand the secrets that the Lord tells you. The Lord says to us in Isaiah 45: 3, "I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name."
I pray that each of us will have ourselves available to listen to the Lord's voice when He calls us by our names. He has plans for our lives, greater than we could ever imagine. He has missions and ministries set for us, much greater than we could have ever thought of. He will give us visions that may not be possible with human thought but with the spirit of God. Today, this is the call. Be ready to listen when the Lord calls you, and let the conversation go on.
May the blessings of God the Father, the love and grace of Christ Jesus the Son, and the fellowship and guidance of the Holy Spirit, be with us as we continue to be available to listen to His voice and serve Him faithfully.
May God bless you.
Yours in Christ,
Ebenezer Veerasingam
