Being the Salt..

Jesus said,
"You are the salt of the earth. But, if the salt loses its saltiness,
how can it be made salty again?

It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men".

(Matthew 5:13)

In the gospel of Matthew, chapters 5,6 & 7, we find some of the wonderful and deep lessons taught by Jesus which are highly compressed in their meanings. It is known as the "Sermon on the Mountain". The above mentioned passage from Matthew's gospel is one of them.

Here we find, Jesus telling, that we are called to be the salt of the earth. As people who make use of the salt in our daily life, we know, that salt is an important thing which has to be added in our food to produce good taste and without the adding of salt, how difficult it is for our taste buds to admit that our food is worth eating. Are we being the salt in our family, in our work place, among our friends, as the salts who enrich the taste of others life who are around us? Do we make them happy? Do we show that we care for them? Do we make them feel worthy? Let's do that, because Jesus said that we are called to be the salt in this earth. We should flavor their lives and make it worthy.

Another thing the salt does is, it preserves. A little bit of salt added to a thing, makes it preserved for days and months. Are you able to preserve the goodness in others and the fellowship which is around you? You are called to be the salt which preserves the lives around it.

Following this, Jesus tells us not to lose our saltiness. If the salt loses its saltiness, there are no ways to make it salty again. It will be no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men. Most of the salt used in Israel, where Jesus lived, came from the Dead sea and was full of impurities. This caused it to lose some of its flavor. Jesus asks us to be pure in our hearts so that, as salt, we may not lose our flavor. Among all the temptations, weaknesses and difficulties, let's try to be pure in our hearts, so that we can enrich the flavor in others life, who are around us. We can be a blessing in their life.

May God bless you..
