The Steadfast Love of the Lord
Passage to read: Psalm 136
"Give thanks to the Lord, because He is good!
His love continues forever."
(Psalm 136:1)
So many times I have got this strange feeling of being left alone. I am not referring to the feeling of being lonely, but the fear that all of us get now and then regarding our tomorrows. Suddenly we feel vacant. Our mind extremely questions our future.
The realisation that one day everyone and everything around us will be far away, slowly hits our hearts and we begin to struggle within. Everything that we have put our hope on will be in a distance; a gap far from reaching. I wonder what is that one thing that still keeps me moving. What is that force that makes us go in search of something every day when we wake up? What is that power behind us that keeps building the hope of eternity and assurance of someone being there? I believe that it is 'the steadfast love of the Lord.'
The word steadfast could point out different meanings at different levels. But, at all times, it has the essence of faithfulness and unwavering companionship within it. A love that faithfully continues forever! And it is this steadfast love of the Lord that keeps us moving. Through all situations, all uncertainties and unknown tomorrows this love holds us together and makes us move on with hope. Psalm 136 is full of the praises of the Lord in all situations. This psalm is an exaltation of the goodness of the Lord that is expressed through His faithful and unwavering love that continues forever. Whoever we may be, in whatever situation our spiritual life may be and whatever others may think we may be, our Lord loves us the same through all the seasons. His love is unwavering!
Do we remember what King David prayed for in his 'psalm for forgiveness' (Psalm 51)? He asks the Lord to "renew a steadfast spirit" within him. Yes. That's the spirit of the Lord, and that's the same characteristic God expects in us too. Human decisions may change. A man's mind would waver. A woman's heart may change. An entire army of people who stood behind you may just stand against you within a minute. But the faithful and unwavering love of the good Lord does not change. It continues through the ages, through all systems and through all circumstances.
Have you ever thought of the meaning of 'good'? If you haven't, I would like to encourage you to do that now? Think of what it means when we say 'good.' And then we would be able to think about why we say that our Lord our God is 'good.' The understanding of the word would fill us with awe and would lead us to thank the Lord, our King, for He is 'good' and we know that His love is faithful, unwavering and it continues forever.
Today as we meditate on this word, shall we take some time to look back and see how good God has been in our lives. Shall we pause for a while and thank Him as we go through some of our unforgettable events in life? Can we spend a moment in allowing our hearts to feel the awe in realising how good the Lord has been in our lives? He has been so good. So faithful. With an unwavering love, He has brought us this far through all conditions. I just want to encourage you to take some time to realise this wonderful love. I am sure, as your heart keeps reminding you of all the wonderful things that the Lord has done, you will see how miraculous is His love for you is.
I pray that God will help all of us to realise how good He is. We will wonder at this marvellous love of the Lord. A steadfast love that continues with us through eternity. And it is then that our fears of tomorrow will fade away. Striking thoughts of the future will fly away. May the ever-guiding love of Christ Jesus and the presence of the Holy Spirit guide you to see how amazing is this love.
May God bless you.
Yours in Christ,
