When Your Eyes are Good...

"Your eye is the lamp of your body.
When your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light.
But when they are bad, your body also is full of darkness."
( Luke 11: 34 )

It just makes us close our eyes for a while. Imagine the whole purpose of these two organs of the body being created by God; carefully knit while we were in our mother's womb. What if they never opened again? What if they couldn't perform their duties in the coming days? Problem on the horizon. Eyes! How precious they are. What great gifts. The two diamonds fixed in our body to make our whole infancy look brightened. I've also read that "the world is a different place through the eyes of a child." But there's something more. Something that reminds us of the choices we make every minute; the choice of where to look and what to see.

Jesus describes our eye as the lamp of our body. Let's imagine ourselves in the middle of a dark room trying to search something, holding a lamp in our hands. It is exactly what our eyes do. When our eyes go in search of things that are good and pleasant, our whole life, day by day, is witnessing the things that belong to the world of light; things that enrich our life with light. Jesus says, "when your eyes are good, your whole body also is full of light." The more and more our eyes know where to concentrate and where to focus on, our life keeps moving towards the right direction; the direction in which our life finds something that is good.

When our eyes are bad, Jesus says, "your body also is full of darkness." It's not just the opposite of what we have discussed above. This is a greater challenge. I remember, once during a chat with Benny Prasad, a Guinness world record holder for the number of countries traveled by a person within a short period of time, saying "the challenge in the present world is not finding the right things, but avoiding the wrong ones." From the moment you wake up in the morning and until you go to bed, let your eyes be warned not to go in search of things that are bad.

Some of us would be having a question now. "How can I choose what to see and what not to?" Sometimes we feel that our eyes do not have control over what we are going to see the next second; it is random, beyond our choice. True! But my dear friend we have control over our second look; going in search of the same thing for the second time. Let me stress on the word "search!" It is true that your eyes do not have control over what you are going to see in the next minute, soon after reading this line. But, it is very much acknowledged that you must be having a total control over whether your eyes are going to go in search of that once again or not, and that's where your eyes are defined. 'Good' or 'bad'?

Let me remind you one last thing. We are humans. We are flesh and blood who are living with the breath of God. It is really difficult if we alone try to overcome the challenge of keeping our eyes clean, avoiding that second look. And this is where we need God's help.

Today, my dear friend, if you are struggling with the challenge of avoiding that second look towards the darkness, keeping your eyes always focus on the things of the light, you should kneel down and pray. Ask God to be your strength next time when your eyes struggle to have that second look towards the dark side.

Your eye is your lamp of your body. Let your lamp lead you towards things that are good.

                May God bless you.
