Agreement and Togetherness in Christ Jesus
Also, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about something and pray for it,
it will be done for you by my Father in heaven.
This is true because if two or three people come together in my name,
This is true because if two or three people come together in my name,
I am there with them.
(Matthew 18: 19, 20)
(Matthew 18: 19, 20)
As someone who strongly believes in the fellowship of believers, I find the above verses to be very influential and demanding. Christ Jesus was directly stressing on the importance of the fellowship among believers. It was all about the oneness of thoughts. The whole teaching was about the agreement and togetherness of believers. In other words, Christ Jesus wanted us to stay connected and be mindful of each other when we came into His presence.
I am able to see two important elements of Christian fellowship from the verses we have read above. "Agreeing about something" and "coming together in Jesus's name." These two essential aspects of a church or a community of believers show the great results that these elements would bring in to - 'answered prayers' and 'God's mighty presence.' These two elements of a Christ-centered congregation/fellowship bring in the much-needed results of what a community of believers could stand for. Let us look at them in detail.
First of all, Christ Jesus shows the importance of two people "agreeing about something" when we join to pray. He shows very accurately that only the prayers that are results of the oneness of two minds can bring in the answers. The point is very clear. If we want our prayers to be answered, then, first of all, everyone in the praying group/fellowship should agree that we all want the same thing. First, the ones who pray together for something should agree in what they ask for. We cannot expect our prayer to be answered when four people join in prayer and each has a different attitude about the things that we are asking for. And that prayer is definitely not answered. What God expects is that when we kneel down to pray together, our hearts and minds must think about the same, must feel the same level of need and must of the same attitude towards the things that we are praying for. The result of such an 'agreed prayer' is the answer from God. What we asked for will be done to us by the Father in heaven.
Secondly, when we pray, we should come together as children of God in His name. It is very important that we leave our personal identities, our names, our social statuses, our likes and dislikes away, and come into the Lord's presence together in His name. When we join, our sole identity would 'a child of God.' When we pray together, our only task would be 'the prayer.' And, when we ask everything, we only ask those things out of the pure grace of God. We must pray together in Christ Jesus's name. We must enter into His presence with that name alone. And when join, having Christ Jesus as the only name that connects and leads us, we could see that our prayers are being answered in such miraculous and wonderful ways. That would be the life of testimony as a church that would see the fruits if its prayers being given in mighty and wonderful ways.
Today, as a fellowship of Christ Jesus, as a congregation that worships the Lord, as a network that looks forward to sharing the love and compassion of God, we are called to adhere to these two important elements of our faith walk together. We are called to agree about everything that we pray for and to come into God's presence in His name alone. And when strongly and diligently hold on to these two important aspects of our Christian lifestyle, we would see the fruits of our prayers in abundance.
May the mighty power of God our Father, the love and grace of Christ Jesus and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with us and guide us towards the agreement and togetherness that we would find in the Lord.
May God bless you.
Yours in Christ,
