God's Way, without His Footprints
Passage to be read: Psalm 77
You made a way through the sea
and paths through the deep waters,
but your footprints were not seen.
(Psalm 77: 19)
The greatness of our God is felt in all parts of our life. In all kinds of moments, His ever-sustaining love and guidance gives us the strength. And His grace is sufficient for us in all times whether it could be a joyous celebration or even a mourning emptiness. The Psalmist wonders at the mighty things that God our Father has done and enthrones God with praise as he sings of the greatness of the Lord. But there is this verse which we have taken for our thinking today, as it goes a step further. With exaltation in His heart and song, the Psalmist remembers all the great moments that God has done wondrous things in His life. He says, in Psalm 77:11,12..
"I remember what the Lord did;
I remember the miracles you did long ago.
I think about all the things you did
and consider your deeds"
It is not something that happens randomly in a natural order, but the Psalmist shows that God is being specific. He shows how personally God deals with us. With His chosen children and how great is His guidance in their lives. And those who search God with holiness find Him in His everlasting greatness. Psalm 77: 13-15 says,
"God, your ways are holy.
No god is as great as our God.
You are the God who does miracles;
you have shown people your power.
By your power you have saved your people,
the descendants of Jacob and Joseph."
The Psalmist also declares that the Lord is the utmost power who is in control of everything. The natural and physical circumstances, the creation, the obstacles, his fears and everything that we think is beyond the human control. And we see that all of them are not just abiding God's words but they fear the presence of the Lord. And it is so amazing the way the Psalmist puts this in the verses 16-18 in the same chapter.
God, the waters saw you;
they saw you and became afraid;
the deep waters shook with fear.
The clouds poured down their rain.
The sky thundered.
Your lightning flashed back and forth like arrows.
Your thunder sounded in the whirlwind.
Lightning lit up the world.
The earth trembled and shook.
Wow! And a great God with His wondrous mighty hand leading us through all the circumstances, difficulties and pressures of this life is the most precious thing that we all could realize. But, let's have a closer look at the last few verses of Psalm 77 which tell us something greater and more thrilling. The 19th and 20th verses say,
"You made a way through the sea
and paths through the deep waters,
but your footprints were not seen."
Isn't that wonderful? Yes! God makes ways for us even in the midst of the most impossible situations. God miraculously leads us through hard times in ways that our human minds could not even imagine of. And God helps us to overcome circumstances that we think are not bearable or manageable. But God, does these wonders in our lives without we seeing His footprints that have walked the same walk before us. His presence goes in front of us, but His footprints are not seen. God's ways are so wonderful that our human thinking and possibilities cannot even see them. Remember those moments that you were, struggling; God sent someone. Those moments you thought that you needed more; God sent you that cheque you had forgotten. The times you were broken and depressed, and God sent you that friend who sat down with you, talked, made you smile and prayed with you. Remember that moment when your entire brilliance failed and God gave you a clue from one of those books in the shelf. And in all these moments, we could not see His footprints that made the way for us in the middle of the waters that we would have otherwise drowned into. Our God is that awesome! Our God is this faithful! And our loving Lord always wonderful and caring!
I want to encourage you today, to just spend few moments in looking back at the wonderful ways in which God has been leading you through the worst circumstances ever. You may even end up in tears realizing a big question arising in you, "How? How? How did I overcome?" Let me remind you my friend, that God was with you while you were crossing the deep waters, and when He made the way for you through that, but His footprints were never seen! God has His own wonderful ways of dealing with you, and you just have to trust in His greatness and power, and grow in your walk of faith with Him.
May God bless you.
Yours in Christ,
