A New Year with an Unchanging God

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
(Hebrews 13:8)

A few years back, on the 31st of December, I was surprised to see a Facebook post that reminded me that the only thing that changes with a new year is the annual calendar; everything else will be the same! The hard truth not only hit me so badly but made me lose the excitement and thrill I carried as a young person about a forthcoming new year.

Even though this thought changed my worldly ideas about a new year, it was a clue to the most constant, static, sustained and unchanging truth about our spiritual life - the unchanging Lord our God Jesus Christ! Yes. Days, weeks, months and years may pass by, things may change or may not change, may evolve or may not evolve, but the Lord our God remains the same through all this.

We serve the Lord who blesses us, uplifts our life, helps us and cares for us in the same way as He has done always in the past. We are assured of this same love for the years to come too. Hebrews 13:8 reminds us of this very important truth that we may have to learn and remind ourselves of throughout the year. We could look back at some of the new years we have celebrated, rejoiced with great hopes of success. Some of these first weeks of these years were filled with cheer and excitement. Some of those years began with sorrow, since the ones who had celebrated with us in the past may not be near us now. We would have grown. We would have changed. Our attitudes differ now. Our perspectives vary. How different we are compared to many of the new-year days we have come across! But Christ Jesus, our Lord and Saviour, is the same through all these years. Not even a drop of His love for us has reduced and not even His care over us has ceased. That is the assurance we have.

Today, as we have stepped into a new year, and as we have just tasted the first day of this year 2022, there must be numerous fears and hopes buried within us. We may smile, greet everyone the best for the year, dress to our best and sing with joy, but deep within there will be some wordless anxieties that may slowly be caressing us as we look forward towards a clueless year. Our annual planners may be vacant without the assurance of a normal and smooth year. We may be trying to keep away such fears than dealing with them. The uncertainty that we had experienced in the last two years have left us with blank answer lines which are never going to be filled unless we live and experience each day of this year. What is our way out? Or is there a way out?

I would say, interestingly, we do not have a way out; we have to face each day. But I can assure you that you do not need to fear or worry about the little and big fears that lie behind our smile walls. You have an unchanging God next to you. He is holding your hand and says "do not fear, for I am with you" (Isaiah 41:10). The Lord's love and care have not changed even for an inch. He will lead you in the same way as He has been over the years. Surely His grace is sufficient for you. Surely His hand will lead you. Come out of your anxieties because Christ Jesus does not change! He is the same yesterday and today and forever... through eternity!

I want to encourage you today to look to our unchanging God. Give all your worries and fears into His miraculous and mighty hands. He will lead you. He will take care of your things. He will be your everything. The wonderful presence of Christ Jesus will be felt in every part of your life when you submit everything into His hands. You can walk the same walk with the Lord as you have done in the past years, just throughout every day of this new year, and in the coming years too. May the power and blessings of God the Father, the love and grace of Christ Jesus the Son, and the fellowship and guidance of the Holy Spirit be with us and help us, as we continue to experience His steadfast love.

Wishing you and your family a Happy and Blessed New Year 2022!

May God bless you.

Yours in Christ,
"Jesus the Same" - Hillsong Worship
