Childlike Trust in the Lord
Passage to be read: Psalm 131
Lord, my heart is
not proud; I don't look down on others.
I don't do great
things, and I can't do miracles.
But I am calm and
quiet, like a baby with its mother.
I am at peace, like
a baby with its mother.
(Psalm 131: 1-2)
As people who face
every day's challenges, we have learned to wake up each day with a little
burning lamp of hope within us. And, more than anything, the trust we have in
the Lord who led us through yesterday, has grown throughout the day and we
trust Him more on this day. Many a times we realize, it's not a trust out of
maturity, but a childlike trust in the Lord, totally surrendering ourselves to
Him.
There are moments
when we, all of a sudden, realize that our heart has become a little bit proud.
Proud about a recent achievement, proud about the social status into which we
would have moved into recently, proud about the influence we would have made in
the community and even proud about the God-given blessings. And at times, we
look down on others. Our lifestyle demands that we chose the right people to be
in contact with. We begin to separate ourselves from our own environment and
reserve things for us. And finally, there is a point where we begin to realize
that we are not "everything" and we cannot do "everything."
Look what the
Psalmist says in the verse we have read above. He admits that he is not at all
considerable by others, and even not appealing to himself! By addressing to the
Lord, he finds his way out to ensure that he is not proud, he doesn't look down
on others, he is unable to do great things and can't do miracles. And, then, he
humbles himself in front of the Lord while he admits that he is just like a
baby with its mother; he is at peace. What a submission! And God loves it when
we totally submit ourselves into His hands, losing all our pride and keeping
away our mini strengths.
Today, as we look
around ourselves, there would be so much of incidents, things and circumstances
that make us feel that we could do everything. We tend to believe that we are
capable of completing a particular task without the help of anyone. We take pride
in imagining that "I, myself, is sufficient enough to complete this simple
task." But we all know what happens in the long run. There comes a moment,
a point of realization, when we understand that we ourselves are not enough!
And then we run to God, asking for His help. In others words, we are people
who, a lot of times, keep God as the back-up-plan! And blessed is the one whose first and last
is the trust in the Lord.
Look at the
difference that is understood in those words by the Psalmist.
"Lord,
my heart is not proud; I don't look down on others.
I don't do great things, and I can't do miracles.
But I am calm and quiet."
(Psalm 131: 1-2)
So much of negatives
and impossibilities are made positive and possible when our plans and actions
are based and totally depending on the Lord. As the Psalmist continues to say,
life that was like a storm becomes peaceful and quiet, while a childlike innocent
grows in us. When we begin to have that childlike trust in the Lord, we would
be exactly like a child that is peacefully sleeping on the mother's lap. So
inter-assured, so trustworthy and nothing much to break your head with. God
will take care of the entire conditions in and around us.
My dear friend in
Christ, I just want to encourage you today to have a childlike trust in the
Lord. In this season of remembering the Saviour's birth let us remind ourselves
of His purpose of coming to this earth. He came to remind us that He is there
for us and we could depend on Him. Let us not depend much in ourselves, but
totally submit ourselves into the hands of our Lord, our Creator and our
Preserver and let us learn to build our strong pillars on Him; our one and only
strong foundation.
May God bless you.
Yours in Christ,
