Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life

Passage to be read: John 14: 01 - 13

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?”
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through me.
If you really know me, you will know my Father as well.
From now on, you do know him and have seen him.”
(John 14: 05 - 07)

In one of the fine mornings during the last week, I was reading the same passage, while being seated at the balcony of my residence in the campus and enjoying the beautiful seaside landscape of Nilaveli beach. The sounds of the birds chirping in the green around me and the fine line of the sea horizon observable at far, just kept the passage moving with much imaginations.

I couldn't observe a single pathway anywhere in the midst of the dense green or further on the surface of the calm blue carpet of the sea. I had the same question deep in my heart just like the disciple Thomas and not being aware that the next verse has the answer in it. I looked up, observed the landscape and questioned in my heart, "Lord, then what is the way?"

If you would read the passage for the day carefully (John 14: 01 - 13), you would find the reasons behind this question. Jesus was comforting His disciples knowing that He would not be with them after a while. But He was talking to them the promise of eternity, in which they would be with Him forever.

Jesus begins this comforting words with what the disciples have a clue about. He says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You believe in God; believe also in me" (John 14:01). Jesus stresses upon their established faith in God. But he also understands that these men, His own disciples, have still not realised the way; the way that is standing just in front of them. And after promising His return to take them all to the place of eternity, Jesus says "You know the way to the place where I am going.” And the question voluntarily comes from Thomas - “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” Interestingly, there are two important things that Thomas asks Jesus. Thomas questions the Destination and the Way!

Today, as you read this particular passage, you may be wondering at the same. There are so many questions in your heart that do not have an answer. You are clueless about which path to take, because you are still not sure about your destination! And that is the promise Jesus wants you to have. The ultimate destination and the only way towards that. A lot of times, we realise, that God's plan and His will in our life is our destination. Those who depend on God for everything, indeed, wonderfully and miraculously receive all the blessings that God our Father had promised them. Because their destination was God and His presence. And once you set this destination in your life, your next challenge is to find the right way that would lead you towards this destination. And Jesus promises the way too. He says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."

Everything that troubles your mind is answered in Christ Jesus. Isn't that wonderful? Jesus is the way to the Father and is the only way. And the ultimate truth that you are searching for is found in Him for Jesus is the truth. And all that you need here and forever is found in Jesus, because He is the life. The Way, the Truth and the Life!

Jesus continues to say, "If you really know me, you will know my Father as well. From now on, you do know him and have seen him.” Once you see Jesus in your life, you have already seen God's miraculous presence in your life. All that you need to know about the Father is provided in abundance in Jesus. And He reminds us, that if we know who Jesus is, then we know who had sent him. From the moment you see the presence of Jesus in your life, you know that God's mighty presence is moving with you. From the time you realise the wonderful and graceful characteristics of  Christ Jesus you have already understood what God wants us to understand about Him.

God our Father is our Destination! And He has shown us the way towards Him, and that is Christ Jesus - the only way to God. And this way is the Truth and the Life!

I pray that God will help you to trust this one beautiful thing of Christian Faith. It is the faith that Jesus is the way. And only through Him we can go to the Father. Let you life be strengthened by this wonderful faith and may God lead you towards a devotion where your destination and the way is found in the abundance of God and Him alone.

May God bless you.

Yours in Christ,
